Arrival
What happens in the first five minutes?
A short health form, then a conversation. Every first-time client fills in a health intake form before the session — medication, recent surgery, old injuries, anything tender — and it is what lets a therapist adjust positioning and pressure instead of guessing. It takes two or three minutes, so arrive five or ten minutes early and it stays out of your hour.
Then you talk. Say what hurts, what you have already tried, roughly how much pressure you think you want, and which areas you would rather were skipped. That last one matters more than people expect, and needs no explanation. Sessions run in English, Chinese or Thai, so use whichever comes fastest. If no name on the menu describes what your back is doing, book a Custom Massage and settle it in the room.
What the intake form is for
Positioning and pressure. A recent surgery changes how you lie on the table, a bad knee changes what gets moved, and blood-thinning medication changes how firm the work goes. There is also a short list of conditions worth clearing with your own physician before you book anywhere, and the FAQ page carries it in full.
If you have never done this before
Say so when you book, and again when you arrive. It tells your therapist to explain each step before it happens, and to check in more often for the first twenty minutes. The studio has been taking first visits on Greenville Avenue since 2009.
From the front door to the table, in order
- Pull into the on-site lot on Greenville Avenue — a single-storey storefront with the parking right at the door.
- Fill in the health intake form — first visit only, two or three minutes.
- Tell your therapist what hurts, what you want from the session, and anything to leave alone.
- You are shown to a private room and left alone to undress to whatever level you are comfortable with and get under the top sheet.
- The therapist knocks before coming back in, and asks about the pressure within the first minute or two.
- You stay draped for the whole session. Only the area being worked on is uncovered, and it is covered again before the next one starts.
- Afterwards you are left alone to dress in your own time. Drink some water before you drive.
Draping
How much clothing comes off?
As much or as little as you want, and you are covered either way. Most people undress to their underwear and some keep more on than that. You do it alone with the door shut, get under the top sheet, and stay draped for the rest of the session — only the area being worked on is uncovered, and it goes back under before the therapist moves on.
Reflexology is the massage you keep your clothes on for — feet and hands, organic coconut oil, reclined with your shoes and socks off. Thai Combination Massage is assisted stretching, and it runs on the table with coconut oil and heated stones like the rest of the menu.
Scars, tattoos and areas to skip
Write them on the form or say them in the first five minutes. A whole region can be left alone for an entire session without changing anything else, and you do not owe anybody a reason. Fresh tattoos, recent surgery sites and anywhere sore for a reason you have not sorted out yet come up most.
Where your clothes and your phone go
They stay in the room with you. Treatment rooms here are private and hold one client at a time, so there is no locker, no corridor and nothing to collect afterwards — your things are where you left them when you sit up.
| Session | What you wear | How it runs |
|---|---|---|
| Custom, Swedish, deep tissue, hot stone | Undress to your comfort level, draped throughout | Private room, on the table, oil on the skin |
| Reflexology — foot & hand | Fully clothed | Reclined, shoes and socks off, coconut oil on the feet and hands |
| Thai Combination Massage | Undress to your comfort level, draped throughout | On the table, assisted stretching, coconut oil and heated stones |
| Facials, lashes and brows | Fully clothed | Reclined, face and neck only |
The Room
Should I talk during a massage?
Only if you want to. Some people talk the whole hour and some stop two minutes in, and neither is the wrong way to spend it. A therapist takes the cue from you: once you have stopped answering, the conversation stops.
Two things are worth interrupting for at any point, and they are pressure and comfort. Saying something halfway through a stroke is completely normal, and it is the quickest route to the hour you booked.
If you would rather it were silent
Say so at the start. “I would like a quiet session” is a complete sentence, it will not offend anyone, and it saves you the effort of signalling it later by going quiet and hoping.
The questions you will probably be asked
Whether the pressure suits you, whether you are warm enough, and whether a spot is tender. Yes and no are full answers. A therapist who asks is checking their work, not making small talk.
- Too much pressure, or not enough
- Cold feet, cold room, or wanting a second blanket
- The face cradle sitting at the wrong height
- An area you have changed your mind about
- Needing to move, stretch or use the bathroom
Pressure
What if the pressure is wrong?
Say so, and it changes on the next stroke. Pressure is a dial you hold for the whole hour, and asking for less gives your therapist something to work with. Time spent bracing against pressure is time the session is not doing anything for you.
Firm work is a choice on this menu, not the default. A Custom Massage sits wherever you put it, and deep tissue is a separate booking for the slower, heavier version. NCCIH's summary is that massage therapy appears to have few risks when it is performed by a trained practitioner — which is the frame for an hour on the table: comfort and general wellness, not medical treatment.
What firm is supposed to feel like
Noticeable, and not painful. Deeper work can feel intense the way stretching a tight muscle is intense, which is a different sensation from the one that makes you hold your breath. If you are holding your breath, it is too much for today.
Warmth is adjustable too
So is the blanket and the room. A complimentary heat treatment comes with a Custom Massage, warm stones attach to most sessions, and hot stone massage is a booking of its own if heat is what you want most. Ask at the start, or at any point once you are on the table.
After
How will I feel afterwards?
Loose, slower than you were an hour ago, and usually thirsty. Sit up gradually, take a minute, and drink water before you drive. Most people go back to work the same afternoon.
Firmer sessions can leave you mildly sore the next day, the way a good workout does, and it fades within a day or two. It is likelier if the hour went into one locked area than if it covered the whole body. If something the next morning needs you sharp, book two days ahead of it.
Sleep is the other thing people report back. A 2021 review of 16 studies and 1,346 participants, summarised by NCCIH, suggested aromatherapy may help improve sleep quality in people with insomnia, though the reviewers said larger and more rigorous studies are needed. Essential oils are an add-on here, so ask if you want them.
That evening
Water, a warm shower and an early night. A walk is fine; a heavy gym session straight afterwards is worth moving to tomorrow. Nothing here needs recovery time, and there is no aftercare to buy on the way out.
When people book the second one
Sooner than they expect, and then further apart. If one stubborn area is the reason you came, a run of sessions close together does more than one booked alone and left for six months. Which session to book for a tight back goes through that choice in more detail.
Booking
How do I book, and how far ahead?
Online through Square at any hour of the day, or by phone or text during opening hours on (540) 290-3383 — Monday–Saturday, 8 or 9 AM to 6:30 PM · Closed Sunday. New clients are welcome, and appointments are recommended because Saturdays fill first.
Two policies are worth knowing before you pick a slot. Cancelling or rescheduling asks for 24 hours' notice, and same-day cancellations and missed appointments may be charged. Arriving late shortens your session rather than the next guest's, and the full fee still applies — text ahead if the drive is running long. The FAQ page has the rest.
Before booking a massage anywhere, NCCIH suggests asking about the therapist's training, experience and credentials, how many sessions might be needed, the cost, and whether insurance covers any of it. Massage therapy is a licensed profession in Virginia, and the note at the foot of this article links the free state licence lookup.
Prices shown are online booking prices and include the card processing fee. Cash prices are lower — call (540) 290-3383 to confirm. Gratuity is appreciated and never required.
How far ahead to book
A few days is usually enough for a weekday hour. Saturdays fill first, so give those more notice, and Monday, Friday and Saturday open an hour earlier than the middle of the week if an early start suits you better than an evening one.

Massage therapy is a licensed profession in Virginia. The Virginia Board of Nursing issues the Licensed Massage Therapist credential, and § 54.1-3029 of the Code of Virginia requires an applicant to be at least 18 and to have completed a massage therapy program of at least 500 hours, then to pass the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards licensing examination or another the Board accepts. To renew every two years, 18VAC90-50-75 asks a therapist either to hold current NCBTMB certification or to complete 24 hours of continuing education including an hour of professional ethics. Any Virginia licence can be checked, free, on the Department of Health Professions lookup. Ask us who is working on the day you book, and check the licence yourself.
Sessions at Healing Touch Body Work are offered for relaxation and general wellness. They do not diagnose, treat or replace medical care. If you are pregnant, managing a health condition, or dealing with pain that is new, severe or getting worse, talk with your physician first — the two work well together.

Questions we get asked
What if I fall asleep during my massage?
Then you fall asleep, and nobody minds. It happens constantly, and most therapists read it as a sign the session is working. You may surface when you are asked to turn over, or at the end, when your therapist says your name quietly and steps out to let you dress.
What do I do with my phone during a massage?
Silence it properly and leave it with your clothes in the room — vibrate is audible on a hard surface in a quiet room, so it is not the setting you want. If you are expecting a call you genuinely cannot miss, say so before the session starts and leave the phone where you can hear it. It is a normal request.
What if I need to say something in the middle of the session?
Say it. You do not have to wait to be asked, and you are not interrupting anything that cannot be picked straight back up. Pressure, room temperature, an area you have changed your mind about, needing to move or use the bathroom — all of it is ordinary mid-session.
I have never had a stranger touch me before. Will a first massage feel strange?
It can for the first few minutes, and it settles quickly. Four things help: you undress alone with the door shut, you are draped the whole session, the room holds one client, and a whole region can be left alone without you giving a reason. Reflexology is done fully clothed if you would rather start there.
Is it awkward to book a massage as a man?
No, and nothing about the session changes — the same intake conversation, the same draping, the same pressure dial you control. If you have a preference about who works with you, say so when you book and we will tell you who is working that day.
Should I shower before my appointment?
A courtesy, and it makes the hour more comfortable for you as much as for your therapist. Plenty of people book straight off a shift and nobody is turned away for it. Skip heavy perfume or aftershave though — the room is small and the session is long.
Can my session be in Chinese or Thai?
Yes. Service is available in English, Chinese and Thai, which is why it is worth mentioning when you book. The intake conversation is where pressure and problem areas get decided, and it goes better in the language you would naturally describe a sore shoulder in. Call or text (540) 290-3383 and say which you prefer.
How do I choose between 60 and 90 minutes the first time?
Sixty minutes if you want a full-body session at an unhurried pace, which is what most first bookings are. Ninety if one area needs real time and you still want the rest of the body covered. Forty-five is enough if the neck and shoulders are the whole of the problem.
